Iron Chef - 2015 @ Schools of the Future Conference

The EdTech Iron Chef session was developed by Krista Moroder and members of the ISTE Young Educator Network. The workshop was debuted during the 2013 ISTE conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The session was brought to the Hawai’i Schools of the Future conference to provide professional development that promotes active participation in connecting, collaborating, and creating. Hoping to give a professional development experience that did not resemble the lecture model that we are desperately trying to eliminate. We took the original workshop recipe and infused a local touch with a dash of social media.

Two adventurous teams showed up, ready to take on the Iron Chef Challenge.

Team Google It

Team 2 Guys and a Girl

After explaining our plans, attendees collected their ingredients for the Mixed Plate Challenge. The challenge tasked the teams with developing a project that integrated content areas and the ISTE Standards for Students.

The Ingredient Categories:

  • Learners Abilities (40% ELL, 30% Special Needs, GT classroom, Single Gender Classroom, Reluctant Users of Technology)
  • Learner Levels (PreK-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th)
  • Device (Chromebook, iPad, Android Tablet, MacBook, BYOD)
  • Tech Tools (Google Drive/SkyDrive, iTunes Apps/Chrome Apps/Ext, Geo Tools, Google apps, Applications/Programs, Web tools, Choice)

Attendees were given the choice to choose any format to develop a presentation. Hawaii's EdTech Iron Chef winning team was determined based on the judges score and the number of online votes.

Our special guest judges were:

  • Rachel Armstrong @racstrong ISTE’s Emerging Leader, Class of 2013.
  • Sean Conners @edtechjedi Tech Educator, Le Jardin and 2015 GAFE Iron Chef #teamEQUINOX
  • Mike Travis, Ph.D. @thetrav HSTE Past President

The teams worked their connected educator networks pulling in a combined total of 111 votes within a few hours.

We are excited to announce that Team Google It is the 2015 EdTech Iron Chef winners! View their projects at https://sites.google.com/site/sotfedtechchef/final-projects.
